Installing A Car Subwoofer: Not As Hard As It Seems
One reason many people hesitate to buy car subwoofers is because they think that installation will be difficult and they do not like the idea of fiddling around with their car audio system. However, the installation process of car subs is not as complicated as many people think.
First of all, you need to make sure you have all the equipment you need. A car and subwoofers are essential, obviously, but you will also need a box with the correct size holes to hold the woofers. Any additional wiring you need can be found in an amp wiring kit, available from car audio stores.
In order to prevent accidents and to install your subwoofer safely you must disconnect the battery at the negative terminal. Until this is done any work will be dangerous and you could be seriously injured.
If you have a standard four channel amp, swap the wiring so that only two of the channels go to the main car speakers, leaving you with two channels free to power the sub. These channels will need to be bridged so that they become mono. This is a relatively simple process, although it can look more complex than it is.
To bridge: every channel will have two terminals a positive and a negative. To connect a sub, take the two rear channels – so you have two positives and two negatives. Wire up the positive of one channel to the sub and the negative of the other, to create the bridge connect the other two free terminals together. This is the bridge.
Once you have done this then your subwoofer should be installed into the car electrics. All that remains is to install it securely into the car. Make sure that the sub is fixed properly into the box and then fix the box to the car. Be careful that it is not blocking access to anything important, such as your spare tyre!
