2010's Car Audio Line Up – Amps
For car audio enthusiasts all over the world, there's great news, as this year arrives a number of new systems on the market that endeavour to make car audio systems even better. With more power, proximity and efficiency these babies aim to dominate the car audio scene.
New to this year's market is Alpine's PDX series – an amplifier that is made for ultimate power and sound quality, but which is ultra reliable too. The best thing about these beautifully engineered amplifiers is that they are compact. Apparently they are at least 20% smaller than prior generations and can even be stacked, allowing for more than one amp at a time in a small space.
Not only is this baby small, but is highly efficient. With a 90% efficiency rate, you will be able to channel a serious amount of power into those amps! It incorporates new technology, which acts as a thermal and voltage protector. Internal temperature controllers automatically tell your amp that it is getting over heated and will then generate smaller amounts of power until it has cooled down. This nifty device makes sure your amplifier does not overheat, but keeps the music playing whilst under normally strenuous conditions. It also can prevent shutdowns from other problems, such as when the voltage drops notably under load.
As expected, the new PDX model like many other brand new models to the market has low distortion levels, extremely low noise and a wide band width. The sound quality is without a doubt superior to its predecessors, as it produces a clear sound that is without distortion or interference.
Nor is this model hard to use or install. Even though, the PDX is engineered to be petite, it does not sacrifice its usability. All controls and connections are very easy to find and use on this nifty little number. It's also been made to be easy to install, as quick release connectors enable a quick set up and the guide is easy to follow.

Do I have to hook up my 6 by 9's to my amp or can i hook it up directly to the deck?
I have 2 12" subwoofers and 2 6 by 9's. Can i get a 2 channel amp and hook up my 6 by 9's to my deck but the subwoofers to the amp??
You will definately need an amp for your sub. The easy way to do this is using an RCA cable, plug it into the sub output in the back of the deck and into the sub input on your amp.
For your midrange speakers you can do two things. Your head unit has a built in amplifier (probably ~20 x 4 watts) that you can wire directly into the speakers to power them. You can also use an amplifier in the same fashion that you did with the sub. You connect the amp to the head unit with an RCA cable and you connect the speakers to the amp.
Although either way will work there are some pros and cons. If you hook the speakers into the head unit you will need: less wire, less money (because you don't have to buy an amp), and it will save you time.
However, if you want a good sounding system I would suggest that you get an amp. Although you have topay for it, install it, and run wires there are some major other benefits too. Usually an external amp will greatly improve sound quality. External amps are also capable of providing much more power, so if you're using high power speakers you can play them louder. Even if you don't play your music very loud there will be less distortion and your system will be more efficient.
-For example: If you have 4, 20 watt speakers and you use you're head unit to power them, you're running it at 100% capacity at full volume. If you have a 40 watt x 4 amplifier then you're running it at 50% for the same volume. An amp that has to work less hard to provide the same amount of power will be more efficient, not distort nearly as much, and wll give you overall better sound quality.
Either route will work, it's just a matter of what you want.
